Policy concerning student accommodation and preventing nuisance
The students and stadjers themselves are primarily responsible for preventing nuisance. But the Municipality of Groningen also gives support in various ways, with an active policy. Flex in the City provides all the necessary information. The campaign addresses everyone with regard to his/her responsibilities, and attempts to cultivate mutual understanding. In addition, Flex in the City gives information on the City Council's policy concerning student accommodation. This consists of, among other things:
-
specifying a maximum number of room-hiring premises in a street.
-
the construction of more than 4,500 student houses in the coming four years.
-
official inspections of room-hiring premises with regard to permits, fire safety and maintenance arrears.
In addition, the Municipality is taking various other measures to prevent nuisance. Structural nuisance and irritation are tackled in conjunction with the police. The Municipality also installs bicycle racks at room-hiring premises. The Municipality of Groningen maintains good contact with student associations, the University of Groningen, the Hanze University of Applied Science, and the housing corporations, because everyone has an interest in limiting nuisance as much as possible. In this way, Groningen is able to remain the most attractive student city in the Netherlands. Even for foreign students!
